     Willa Cather’s brilliant novel, My Antonia, portrays life in Nebraska during the late 1880s. Immigrant homesteaders struggled to transform the prairie into productive farmland against often insurmountable odds: harsh weather, devastating insect attacks, and lack of equipment. Native born Americans did not always welcome the new immigrants. In fact, prejudice added to their daily burdens.


    My Antonia reflects the people, places, and events of the period. My Antonia is a novel, and yet the links to real people and places are undeniable. This book explores the swirling events and characters that influenced American life in the late 1800s.
